Training
The Training Program at the RRTC on Aging with a Disability is man with post-polio syndrome speaks with first year medical studentdirected
toward improving the knowledge, skills and experience of current and future allied health professionals as well as consumers, family members, community service providers, and researchers. Our mission to train on a national level is accomplished through workshops at well-established conferences, for example, the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, the Gerontological Society on Aging, National Council on Independent Living, and the Abilities Expos. Another avenue is through co-sponsored national conferences with the other institutions doing similar/complementary work (e.g., Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (1991, 2001) Western University of Health Sciences’ Center for Disability Issues and the Health Professions (2003)), and our own Center-sponsored educational events.
A variety of training projects are being planned and implemented, including:
Opportunities for first year medical students to interview persons with a disability
Curriculum development for medical students and primary care residents
Center-sponsored conferences for professionals
Center-sponsored educational events for consumers
Presentations at national conferences
Publication of articles and chapters in scientific journals and consumer publications
Consumer Dissemination
A unique feature of this Center is the strong emphasis on providing useful and current information to people with disabilities and their families. These consumers are the ultimate beneficiaries of the Center’s efforts. A variety of techniques are used to disseminate information, including articles in consumer magazines, presentations at consumer meetings, our website and others, distribution of current research updates and publications, and a resource manual.
